Jazz/World vocalist Phillip Hamilton at Studio 99 Friday, October 5 at 8 pm

Philip Hamilton is revered as one of the most exciting contemporary vocalists on the international jazz and world music stages. With a rich voice that conveys a "warrior's strength, a blues man's soul and a romantic's heart" Hamilton is a true original.

Hamilton has performed or recorded with Pat Metheny, Spyro Gyra, Steely Dan's Donald Fagan, Greg Osby, John Medeski, Bill Evans, Mike Manieri, Richard Bona, Gil Goldstein, Mike Stern, John Cage, and Living Colour's Vernon Reid. The New York Times called Hamilton's innovative singing and composing style "contemporary and cutting edge" while the Village Voice has celebrated his music as simply "masterful."

Mr. Hamilton is also recognized as a leading contemporary composer for dance and film. He has composed for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ron Brown, Mia Michaels, Ballet Hispanico, Rennie Harris, Robert Battle and Ann Reinking (Tony Award-winning choreographer of Chicago and Fosse). Mr. Hamilton's soundtrack for Randy Dottin's film "Lifted" (Fox/Searchlight Films) has gained wide recognition in international film circles.

Arts Abound in Nashua’s Downtown and Historic Mill Yard as ArtWalk 2012 Moves to the End of September

Local residents and visitors are in for a treat on September 29 and 30, when City Arts Nashua presents ArtWalk Nashua 2012, the city’s premier cultural event, free to the public.

First held in 2006, Art Walk is a two-day festival in downtown Nashua and the nearby Mill Yard that benefits Nashua area artists, entertainers and musicians, as well as downtown restaurants and shops.   Growing every year from a very modest beginning, the ArtWalk now features around 50 area artists and entertainers in over 30 galleries, studios and venues, drawing an audience of around 1,200 people.

The annual event showcases local artists and creative downtown businesses along with free entertainment, workshops, and special events. ArtWalk 2012 runs from noon to 5:00 pm on Saturday, and noon to 4:00 pm on Sunday.

“Nashua’s arts and entertainment scene has been growing by leaps and bounds, and this year ArtWalk again celebrates arts in the community, said Marjorie Bollinger Hogan, City Arts Nashua president.

“It is a great opportunity to meet and see artists at work, and do some early holiday shopping,” she explained.

Countryman & the Buffalo Band bring a soul/funk/jazz mix to Studio 99 Friday 9/14 at 8

The NYC-based Countryman and the Buffalo Band plays contemporary soul jazz with an exciting modern flare. Led by saxophonist Geoff Countryman and comprised entirely by some of the city's top young jazz musicians, the band combines their deep understanding of jazz improvisation with forays into funk, soul and electronica. Mr. Countryman is an in-demand jazz artist whose saxophone sound carries the agility of modernists Joe Lovano and Chris Potter, and the strength of the great Tower of Power saxophonist (and featured Saturday Night Live soloist) Lenny Pickett.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Countryman moved east to attend New York University's jazz performance program where he met many of his Buffalo Band-mates. Since graduating, Geoff has created an impressive body of work and has been in high demand. He can be seen in Julie Taymor's Across the Universe has performed regularly with the Saturday Night Live Band, and has shared stages with Dave Douglas, Patti LaBelle, The Wutang Clan, Chico Hamilton, Ronnie Spector and Randy Brecker.

When Geoff doesn't have an instrument in hand, you can find him behind the boards of his mobile studio, recording a wide range of artists in New York City's most prestigious venues. His company, Geoff & Tyler Recording, is responsible for the Grammy nominated albums: Gregory Porter's Water and Fred Hersch's Alone at the Vanguard.
